YEAR 8 pupils at Astor College were able to explore time travel with the help of visiting author Alex Scarrow.
Alex, the mastermind behind the Time Riders series of books, spoke to the entire year group about what inspired him to become a writer.
He was also able to shed some light on his literary series, which follows teenagers who are recruited from different time periods to form a shadowy organisation whose main aim is to stop anyone tampering with history.
Alex described the collection of nine books as: "A kind of antidote to Dr Who that sees time travel get a gritty dose of realism."
Much of Alex's early career was spent in the computer games industry, where he learned some valuable lessons. He said "I was told by my boss that all you need to do to keep children entertained is give them a game where they can shoot things, I mean how insulting is that? Teenagers have such creative minds, they just need a chance to use them."
After his presentation Alex was on hand to answer students' questions before an impromptu book signing.
Student Natasha Palmer said: "I've already read some of his books and started to write some of my own short stories. Something like this just makes me want to carry on."
